A Historic Figure

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing
