In a move that combines financial support with a firm ultimatum, Washington has pledged $2 billion for United Nations humanitarian efforts. But, this aid was accompanied by a direct message for the international body: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Major Announcement Amid Wider Budget Reductions
The funding announcement came against a backdrop of substantial reductions in American support of global aid. Additional reductions are expected from other key donors such as Britain and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the announcement together with the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will help save countless lives," stated the United Nations' humanitarian chief. However, this amount is just a small portion of America's historical spending, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
