Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
