At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
